Eufy, a smart home brand of tech accessory firm Anker, had become popular among some privacy-minded security camera buyers. Its doorbell camera and other devices proudly proclaimed having “No Clouds or Costs,” and that “no one has access to your data but you.”

That’s why security consultant and researcher Paul Moore’s string of tweets and videos, demonstrating that Eufy cameras were uploading name-tagged thumbnail images to cloud servers to alert owners’ phones, likely unencrypted, stung smart home and security enthusiasts so hard this week.

Moore, based in the UK, started asking Eufy rhetorical questions about its practices on Twitter starting November 21. “Why is my ‘local storage” #doorbellDual storing every face, without encryption, to your servers? Why can I stream my camera without #authentication?!” Moore also posted lines from “source code & API responses” that suggested a very weak AES key was being used to encrypt video footage.

Google has removed two apps, one with more than 100,000 downloads, after receiving a report they were part of an illegal scheme that surreptitiously forwarded text messages that were used to create fraudulent accounts on third-party websites.

The first app, named Symoo, billed itself as an easy-to-use SMS messenger. Once installed, it would ask for the user’s phone number and then pretend to load the application. The app would then hang on the screen while, in the background, it copied every text received and sent it to goomy[.]fun, a website controlled by the developer.

The screen would hang indefinitely, so eventually many users would likely force-quit the app and uninstall it. During the time Symoo was running, however, the developer would use the number for a fee-based service that registered fake accounts on sites that require SMS-based verifications. While the app was running, the service would register accounts using the infected phone’s number and then copy the verification code returned by the site. Besides sending texts associated with the fake account creation, Symoo forwarded any texts the infected phone received from other parties.

Apple released a minor software update for iPhones today. Unlike many of its other iOS updates, the new iOS 16.1.2 was not released in tandem with updates to Apple’s other operating systems like macOS or watchOS.

iOS 16.1.2 primarily does two things, per Apple’s release notes: it improves compatibility with unspecified wireless carriers, and it optimizes the Crash Detection feature on the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple hasn’t gone into detail about what kinds of optimizations we’re talking about. Crash Detection is a newly introduced feature that can notify emergency services when the phone’s internal sensors have detected that you’ve been in an automobile accident. Apple developed algorithms that look at a variety of data from the phone’s sensors (such as the accelerometer and G-force sensors) and other factors like microphone activity to attempt to accurately detect crashes.

The organizers of a major Super Smash Bros. tournament series, the Smash World Tour, say that Nintendo has denied their request for an official license, cutting off months of negotiations “without any warning.” The decision has led to the cancellation of next year’s season and next month’s 2022 Smash World Tour Championships, though Nintendo now says that it “did not request” any changes for the championship. Either way, it’s an abrupt end for a massive tour that attracted 325,000 entrants across thousands of events in 2022, according to organizers.

“We are incredibly devastated that any of this happened, and given the trajectory of Nintendo, we were truly hopeful that significant, positive change was inbound,” Smash World Tour organizers said in a lengthy open letter detailing the factors that led to the cancellation. “However, the way the last few weeks have unfolded, we are extremely worried that all of that progress has been abruptly reversed.”

Stymied negotiations

As we’ve discussed in the past, US copyright law gives Nintendo the right to shut down any and all Smash Bros. tournaments, which qualify as “public performances” of one of the company’s games. Nintendo has exercised this right a few times in the past, usually to shut down tournaments that use “unauthorized” mods for the base Smash Bros. games.

It has been a busy second half of the year for the Moon. Since late June, three US rockets have launched payloads to the Moon, and one more is set for early Friday morning.

Across these four launches—two on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, one on Rocket Lab’s Electron, and one on NASA’s Space Launch System—there have been a total of 15 spacecraft sent to fly by the Moon, enter orbit, or land there. The most notable of these, of course, is NASA’s Orion spacecraft, which is due to return to Earth on December 11.

This represents a remarkable renaissance in lunar exploration. Consider that, from 1973 to 2022, NASA and the United States sent a total of 15 spacecraft to the Moon over a period of five decades. Now, thanks to a mix of commercial, academic, and government payloads, US rockets will launch 15 spacecraft to the Moon in about five months.

California naturopath and homeopath Juli Mazi will spend 33 months in federal prison for falsifying federal COVID-19 vaccination cards and selling pellets she falsely claimed would offer lifetime protection from COVID.

It was a scheme that netted her thousands of dollars in the early phases of the pandemic before also earning her the first federal criminal fraud prosecution related to bogus COVID-19 vaccination and vaccination records.

Mazi, of Napa, California, pleaded guilty to the charges in April and faced a maximum sentence of 25 years for all the charges.

Trackballs aren’t exactly a trendy PC accessory. Their heavy, clunky builds bring dated vibes to office setups. And despite 73 years of existence, trackballs have been usurped by modern mice and trackpads as the preferred forms of computing input. But despite their low mainstream popularity, trackball mice still hold a place in many people’s hearts.

If you have a physical issue such as carpal tunnel syndrome or a repetitive strain injury that makes repeated movements difficult and/or painful, you may be one of those people holding onto a trackball mouse. While generally larger and heavier than traditional mice, trackball mice make it easier to keep your hand and arm in a neutral position and avoid pronation.

And because you don’t push trackball mice around the top of your desk, they can be more accommodating of tight workspaces. Some trackball fanatics also praise the precision they can achieve with the gentle twisting of the right trackball. But there’s definitely a learning curve to using them, and they aren’t for everyone. And a good trackball mouse may not be as fast or precise as your best PC mouse with a traditional design.

During Elon Musk’s first two weeks as the owner of Twitter, he seemed to have an ally in Yoel Roth, who had been the social network’s head of trust and safety for seven years. Roth defended some of Musk’s early actions and touted Twitter’s work to crack down on hateful conduct. Musk pointed his followers to Roth’s tweets explaining Twitter’s content moderation work and said Roth has “high integrity”—even though they disagreed on whether former President Trump should have been suspended.

“I recommend following @yoyoel for the most accurate understanding of what’s happening with trust & safety at Twitter,” Musk wrote on October 31.

But Roth quit on November 10, a day after Musk rolled out the $8-per-month Twitter Blue subscription that came with verification checkmarks. Musk had ignored prescient warnings from Roth’s team and was forced to backtrack from paid verification after scammers eagerly paid $8 for checkmarks that made it easy to impersonate prominent accounts. Musk’s revamped Twitter Blue was set for a relaunch this week but was delayed again.
